Welcome to the Annapolis Valley
Hello and welcome to the Escape to the Valley Blog where it is my goal to showcase the very best that living in the Annapolis Valley – here in beautiful Nova Scotia – has to offer.
My name is Adam Kemp and I have decided to start this journey at what most people call “The Lookoff”, about 20 kilometers North of Wolfville. But why would I start here?
Well, when I was thinking about starting a YouTube series and a blog as a guide to life in the Annapolis Valley, I thought back to when I was showing my family and friends around for the first time. And every time without fail, this is where I brought them.
Loved by locals and tourists alike, the Lookoff gives a beautiful view of the valley floor, the vineyards, orchards, farms, towns, the ocean and all of the things that make the valley special. You can see how this verdant and stunning place is nestled between the two mountains and on a clear day it seems like you can see the entire thing, from Grand Pre all the way down to Digby and Annapolis Royal.
But Adam, what and where is the Annapolis Valley?
Located in the western part of Nova Scotia, the Annapolis Valley is a picturesque region that stretches along the Bay of Fundy. It’s known for its stunning landscapes, charming small communities, and delicious local food.
Between the North and South mountains, the valley is home to several historic towns, including Annapolis Royal, Wolfville, Kentville, and Berwick, all of which offer unique experiences and attractions.
The valley is also surrounded by rolling hills, forests, lakes and beaches and another thing going for it is that it is actually one of the warmest parts of Nova Scotia. So we’ll call that another win for the valley there.
This warmth and wide open space have also made the Valley renowned for its agriculture. The region is home to many family-owned farms, orchards, and vineyards, and visitors can sample a wide variety of fresh, locally grown produce, as well as wine, cider and beer (ya know, if you’re into that sort of thing). The valley is also particularly well-known for its apples, which are celebrated each year during the Apple Blossom Festival (keep an eye out for another blog and video on this in the future).
Heading up to the Lookoff really gives you a sense of place when visiting the area but to be honest, I mainly brought people up there for the ice cream and I guess the view is okay as well.
And speaking of ice cream, just behind that spectacular view is the ‘Look and Lick’ ice cream place that will sell you an enormous ice cream and is extremely reasonably priced. And as a British person who is used to paying extortionate amounts of money for a thimble-full of ice cream, this makes me happy in so many ways – so it’s definitely worth a visit!
There’s also camping up at the Lookoff and if you’re lucky, you may even be able to buy a piece of property with this stunning view to call your very own (see my ‘Move to the Valley‘ page for more help with that).
All this and I haven’t even mentioned the Bay of Fundy – just to the North of the Lookoff – which is famous for its dramatic tides, which can reach heights of up to 50 feet and have created beautiful rock formations such as those you can see at Cape Blomidon. I will be covering that in more detail in a future video/blog, so watch out for that as well.
Overall, the Annapolis Valley is a beautiful and fascinating part of this province that offers something for everyone. Whether you’re interested in history, outdoor adventures, or culinary delights, you’re sure to find plenty to enjoy whether you’re looking for a vacation spot or a place to settle down.
So join me as I tour the very best parts of this beautiful region – which definitely isn’t just an excuse for me to visit all my favourite spots around here and to try to get some free food and drinks while I’m at it….. nope….. not this guy.
